World Book Night: The Power of Reading

World Book Night is a celebration of books and reading. It takes place every year on the 23rd April presented by The Reading Agency, a national charity that tackles life’s big challenges through the proven power of reading.
Every year, families, individuals, libraries, health organisations and many others come together to celebrate the difference that reading makes to people’s lives.
This year, World Book Night is going digital to respect the governments COVID19 restrictions. The Reading Agency is hoping to connect the nation during lockdown, encouraging everyone to join ‘Reading Hour’ on the 23rd April from 7-8pm and enjoy reading a book alone, with your family or share your recommendations.
What are the health benefits of reading?
- Reading offers a number of benefits especially for older people; studies show that 8-10% of people aged 65 and older are often or always lonely, while 12% feel socially isolated.
- There have been numerous studies to show that doing something as simple as reading can reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s and Dementia in the elderly, as it helps keep the brain active
- World Book Night aims to bring people together to build social networks, connect with others and improve overall wellbeing.
- Those who read for pleasure report fewer feelings of stress and depression than non-readers. Take a look at our previous blog post on the benefits of reading.
