Movember is an annual event that encourages men to grow moustaches throughout November in order to raise awareness of men’s health issues, including mental health, testicular cancer, and prostate cancer.
Since 2003, Movember has funded more than 1,250 men’s mental health projects.
Despite mental health challenges affecting individuals of all genders, societal models often discourage men from expressing their emotions. As a result, many men suffer in silence, making it difficult for them to seek help. According to the Government of the United Kingdom, currently, suicide is the leading cause of death for men under 50 in the UK.
Due to stereotypes, some men grow up being told that it’s not okay for them to get emotional and that it’s not okay for them to talk about their feelings. Through awareness and action, the Movember organisation is working to change this and raise awareness and support for Men's mental health and prostate cancer across the general public.
Men’s mental health
If you notice someone struggling, offering reassurance can make a significant difference, by simply letting them know you are there for them. Most men find it difficult to talk about their feelings, so giving them that reassurance may encourage them to reach out.
By offering some advice, you may be able to help someone feel a lot better. But what is the right thing to say? Although there is no right or wrong answer, try not to blame them for how they‘re feeling. For example, if someone says they’re struggling because they’re stressed and overwhelmed, try not to say it’s because they have taken too much on; try to offer reassurance and tips on how to improve their well-being. Offering tips such as going on a nice walk or surrounding themselves with the people they love.
Men suffer from mental health challenges too, and until we challenge the stereotypes surrounding this, things won’t get easier for them. It’s important for men to feel they can speak up when struggling without fear of judgment, as it’s perfectly normal for anyone to struggle. If you are struggling with your mental health, don’t hesitate to reach out and talk to someone.
